826CHI is a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting students ages 6 to 18 with their creative and expository writing skills, and to helping teachers inspire their students to write.
Our services are structured around the understanding that great leaps in learning can happen with one-on-one attention, and that strong writing skills are fundamental to future success.
With this in mind, we provide drop-in tutoring, after-school workshops, field trips, in-school tutoring, help for English language learners, and assistance with student publications.
All of our programs are challenging and enjoyable, and ultimately strengthen each student’s power to express ideas effectively, creatively, confidently, and in his or her individual voice.

How many students do you serve each year and where do they come from?
826CHI provides free writing and tutoring programs for Chicago students ages 6 to 18, annually serving nearly 4,000 students and forming supportive partnerships with approximately 150 teachers.
How much does it cost to attend 826CHI?
All of 826CHI’s student programming is free!

How many volunteers are involved with 826CHI and who are they?
826CHI maintains a network of more than 1,400 volunteers from the Chicago community -including professional writers, artists, and teachers— with more than 350 volunteers regularly devoting their time and talents to our programs. These qualified and compassionate individuals staff each and every program 826CHI offers, enabling us to serve more than 4,000 students annually.
Can any student submit work for the 826 Compendium?
