Real Name: Mariana M.

What’s your favorite book or author?
Probably Rick Riordan. He writes mythology, that’s mostly the books I’ve read from him. I’ve also read his comic books and chapter books. My favorite book is the Lightning Thief. I liked how at first there is an introduction about being a half-blood you should start reading. It’s a great hook!

Who is your favorite character from mythology?
Poseidon, because he’s Percy Jackson’s father and does stuff with the ocean.

Do you have any special hobbies or talents?
Art and singing, but no one really knows that I sing much. Sometimes I sing to the music on the radio, on Pandora, like teen pop. Right now my favorite song is called “Bingo.” Sometimes l like to draw cartoon people, and in art with Picasso drawings, like shapes.

What inspired you to write “Moonlight in The Dark Light?"
So, we had a Writing Rally and we had to pick a book and stop to a page randomly and use a sentence from inside the story. I saw a cover of a book with fairies around her. I decided to combine that with a girl who’s a fairy. I saw how her hair was -- she didn’t seem like a good fairy or a bad fairy, but half and half.

I love how you describe the color of Moonlight’s room as “galaxy purple.” That’s such a vivid detail. If you could paint your room any color, what would you paint it?
White, black, blue, and purple. Like the galaxy.

I really like the part at the end of your story where you fast forward seven years, and the characters say, “We’re young and alive! Hooray!” That’s an awesome last line.
I remembered the Three Musketeers and when they were happy. I wanted to write a line that was inspired by that. She didn’t have sisters, only brothers. They were all young, so it felt pretty accurate.

What’s your favorite memory of 826CHI?
My favorite memory was probably my first chapbook. Oh, I forgot what I wrote! It was really interesting for the first time. I’d never been to a chapbook party. I got to meet a lot of new tutors and everything, and they helped me with my writing.

What’s some writing advice that you can give other students?
That you can write what’s on your mind, or what you’re feeling, and create a journal entry. If you see something that inspires you write it down on paper, and if you want to create it into a story you can make it into a story and change it up a little, and add some juice to it.

What would you like to be when you’re older?
A singer, an actor, or an artist.

Random question from the random question box: If you could be a mythological character, who could you be?
Maybe Anna Beth, from Percy Jackson, because she’s brave and strong.
