826 Chicago Blog

826CHI is a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting students ages 6 to 18 with their creative and expository writing skills, and to helping teachers inspire their students to write.

Our services are structured around our belief that great leaps in learning can happen with one-on-one attention, and that strong writing skills are fundamental to future success.

With this in mind, we provide drop-in tutoring, after-school workshops, in-schools tutoring, help for English language learners, and assistance with student publications.

All of our programs are challenging and enjoyable, and ultimately strengthen each student's power to express ideas effectively, creatively, confidently, and in his or her individual voice.

Jennifer Brandel is a tutor and illustrator for 826CHI. In her other incarnations, she is also a script-doctor, a freelance graphic designer, a DIY crafter, and an aspiring claw-hammer banjoist. Guest Blogger: Meghan Keys

Monday, June 26th, 2006

There is a trend afoot in which guest bloggers neglect to write their own bios even when we threaten that we’ll write something ourselves. Could it be that folks like Meghan Keys feel confident handing over control in this manner, knowing that there is nothing bad we can say about her? If so, […]

Guest Blogger: Sarah Holtkamp

Sarah Holtkamp has neglected to write her own bio, even under threat that one would be written for her. She, in other words, has put her reputation in our hands. Fortunately for Sarah, we adore her: she is one of our most devoted, reliable and good-natured volunteers, and has been around almost […]

Mike Schramm is a Chicago-based freelance writer. He is usually up to something mischievous at his website, mikeschramm.com.
When I first started volunteering at 826CHI, I had but one goal in mind: to serve and educate the children of Chicago, and help them do
their very best in their academic studies.
No, I’m only […]
