826CHI is a nonprofit organization based in Chicago. We are dedicated to supporting students ages 6 to 18 with their writing and help teachers to excite their students. Our work is based on the idea that strong writing skills are fundamental to future success. Specifically we believe that learning improves when incredibly good tutors work one-to-one with students.
Our work is concentrated in the areas of creative writing, expository writing, and English as a second language. We offer free advice after regular school hours, reading events, program tutors who go to local schools and youth publications authors.
If we are students, we are here to help them explore their love of writing and express their ideas through writing.
Our method is simple: with free tutoring, help individual students who come to 826CHI. We know that students improve their writing skills in English and in a few hours with individual help from tutors. We also offer advice in English as a second language.
Registration open for the after school program.
Students in grades 1-12 can come to the center to help with any task. The program is open Monday through Thursday from 3:30 to 6:00 pm. Students who are registered with us can come any wanting some help. We have tutors trained to help students one-on-one with homework, reading, and creative writing projects.
We want to help teachers engage their students in writing so they can express their best ideas. So is that invite teachers to bring their students on a tour. There is always a group of tutors to assist during excursions, either to assist in the development of a new material or to review the work already written. Our most popular tour is called Storytelling and Making Books. In this, the class works with our tutors to create a story with illustrations. In the end, each student takes a copy of the book.
The base of volunteers who have given us the ability to work with schools in Chicago. We coordinate with teachers, we go in groups to ask us any school and work with students in their classrooms. For example, if a history teacher at Wells High School think their students need more help writing an essay about violence in the Middle East, she can ask to send ten 826CHI visiting tutors for class Thursday at 2pm. That day, at the appointed hour, tutors arrive ready to provide individual assistance to students.
Our tutors have experience in different areas of writing: from writing scripts for comics and movies to science fiction. Therefore, we can offer a wide variety of free workshops for young people. You have to register, as space for these workshops fill up quickly. Here is the list of workshops .
We have a busy calendar full of special programs, classes, stories, and events that fill our activity center. Please visit here to see the full calendar of events.
