Spy supplyists at The Boring Store have relocated to 1276 N Milwaukee Avenue in Wicker Park, and upon their grand reopening will operate under a new name: The Wicker Park Secret Agent Supply Co.

Behind this clandestine storefront’s grappling hooks, stakeout books, and rubber nose disguises lies an entity unbeknownst to many: 826CHI, a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting students ages 6 to 18 with their creative and expository writing skills, and helping teachers inspire their students to write. 826CHI is one of eight chapters across the nation, each boasting a themed retail component and collectively serving more than 30,000 young people each year. 826CHI students capture life in Englewood

Chicago Tribune - August 15, 2014

"Even a Lion Can Get Lost in the Jungle," a vivid collection of short essays, is issued from the wide world of a Chicago neighborhood. The young writers who participated in this 826CHI publication project at Harvard Academy of Excellence document the community of Englewood as it once was, as it is becoming, as it might become. Central to this inquiry are conversations with those making their living and their lives in the neighborhood. From a local park, day-care center, a makeshift karate studio, church hall, street corner, fire station and classroom, these writers cover ground. And in so doing, each one does what every serious writer must: They listen very closely; they sit still with possibilities.Read More

826CHI: A Nonprofit Writing and Tutoring Center

Chicago Artists Resource - December 18, 2013

Before you even realize that 826CHI’s literacy program exists, you may just go shopping at The Boring Store (1331 N Milwaukee Ave.) in Wicker Park. It’s "Chicago’s only undercover secret agent supply store" selling everything from spy disguises to gadgets and whirligigs. It also sells a huge selection of literature written by the students in the literacy program hidden behind the cashier, as well as a wide range of authors of interest. (I could browse in there for hours.) I plan on doing all my Christmas shopping there: sales from the store pay for the educational programming in back, allowing all the events and workshops to be free.Read More
