826CHI is a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting students ages 6 to 18 with their creative and expository writing skills, and to helping teachers inspire their students to write.

Our services are structured around the understanding that great leaps in learning can happen with one-on-one attention, and that strong writing skills are fundamental to future success.

With this in mind, we provide drop-in tutoring, after-school workshops, in-schools tutoring, help for English language learners, and assistance with student publications.

All of our programs are challenging and enjoyable, and ultimately strengthen each student’s power to express ideas effectively, creatively, confidently, and in his or her individual voice.

Our Location:

826CHI is pleased to offer free writing-based fieldtrips throughout the 2007–2008 academic year. 826CHI is a creative, inspiring place for teachers to bring their students to improve their writing during the school day. Our space is free and available to teachers in the Chicago area. Students in grades 1–12 are welcomed to join us for writing-based field trips of all kinds. Most of our field trips run Wednesdays through Fridays, from 10 a.m. until noon, and are available for one class of students at a time. Due to the popularity of field trips, schools are limited to 4 classrooms per year.

This year, we have received an overwhelming response for these trips, and we are currently booked for the 2007–2008 school year. We look forward to scheduling more trips and, welcoming additional classes to our space next fall. Currently, we encourage teachers and administrators to join our educator email list, where you will get updates of future happenings at 826CHI, including free writing workshops available to students year-round, as well as information next August when we begin taking reservations for the 2008–2009 school year.
