826CHI is a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting students ages 6 to 18 with their creative and expository writing skills, and to helping teachers inspire their students to write.

Our services are structured around the understanding that great leaps in learning can happen with one-on-one attention, and that strong writing skills are fundamental to future success.

With this in mind, we provide drop-in tutoring, after-school workshops, in-schools tutoring, help for English language learners, and assistance with student publications.

All of our programs are challenging and enjoyable, and ultimately strengthen each student’s power to express ideas effectively, creatively, confidently, and in his or her individual voice.

826CHI is looking for enthusiastic volunteers to assist with our writing programs, as well as with other aspects of the organization ranging from helping in the Boring Store to accounting. If you are interested in getting involved, please complete the volunteer application below:

What is the application process like?

Applicants who fill out our online application will be contacted by email to arrange an interview. Make sure 826CHI is not blocked from your email account and/or check your junk mail often.

We continue to receive a large number of applications and are scheduling interviews on a regular basis throughout the school year. We thank you in advance for your patience and look forward to having you on our team.

What kind of time commitment are volunteers expected to make?

The bulk of our programs run during or right after the school day, which means we especially need volunteers with weekday availability. With that said, we are always looking for volunteers to help out in the store on weekends or teach workshops in the evenings. Basically, we can use whatever time you have to give us!
