New Volunteer Orientation

Our troops of dedicated, playful, and brilliant volunteers are the backbone of our organization. In addition to helping us run every single student program, volunteers serve as lead spies in our storefront, design posters, copy edit books, table at community outreach events, and attend student readings. We're always seeking enthusiastic folks to join our team.

Prospective volunteers are required to complete an online application, background check, and attend a mandatory New Volunteer Orientation before getting started. Learn more about volunteering at 826CHI here. 

This New Volunteer Orientation will take place on Saturday, March 7th from 10am-11:30am in our space on 1276 N. Milwaukee Ave.

Secret Agent Storytime: April

Your mission, if you choose to accept it, is to sing, dance, read books, and make crafts with Agent Zach and your friends, parents, and siblings on the first Sunday of every month at the Wicker Park Secret Agent Supply Co. This message will self-destruct in 30 seconds. We're counting on you, junior story agents!

This event is free and open to the public. Recommended for junior agents ages 0-4 and their families.

Publications Fest 2020: After-School Tutoring & Writing Bilingual Chapbook Release

826CHI's After-School Tutoring & Writing students, parents, volunteers, and staff will be reading aloud our newest student-written bilingual chapbook, Happy as a Rollercoaster//Tan feliz como una montaña. This collection of poems, translated in English & Spanish, is about feelings and emotions. Students were encouraged to illuminate their own emotional journeys and share them with the world.

All events produced under Publications Fest 2020 are free! Only one RSVP is required to receive Zoom invites and e-book versions of each publication as they become available.

Virtual Town Hall Meeting

We invite our community of 826CHI students, families, volunteers, and Chicago's broader literary enthusiasts to join 826CHI's new Executive Director Jennifer Steele, 826CHI board members, and Leila Chatti, Tunisian-American author and poet, for a special Virtual Town Hall on Friday, May 15 from 6-7:30pm.

We'll engage in Story Circles, a traditional indigenous practice, to share stories to spark imagination and writing in small groups.

This event is part of the People’s State of the Union Story Circle series provided by The Action Network.

Zoom link for 826CHI's Virtual Town Hall will be sent to attendees via email!

Publications Fest 2020: Young Authors Book Project Release

We'll be releasing our 2020 Young Authors Book Project, Chaos Comes Naturally on Google Earth, which will include student profiles, voice recorded readings by students and volunteers, and locations marked all over the globe to take you on each writer’s journey. Written by ninety 12th-grade students at George Washington High School in Eastside, this anthology reflects these young writers’ ideas of belonging have evolved as they’ve grown up in our city.
