Our troops of dedicated, playful, and brilliant volunteers are the backbone of our organization. In addition to helping us run every single student program, volunteers serve as lead spies in our storefront, design posters, copy edit books, table at community outreach events, and attend student reading. We're always seeking enthusiastic folks to join our team.

FRESH INK: Writing the Book of Your Heart

Toni Morrison once said, "If there's a book that you want to read, but it hasn't been written yet, then you must write it." In this hands-on workshop, participants will understand how storytelling—in many forms—can be a tool for survival. Participants will engage with the work of Audre Lorde, Billie Holiday, and Octavia Butler, while exploring what it means to write and publish an #ownvoices book. What is the story of your heart? How will you tell it? Why will matter? Come ready to listen, laugh, engage, and share your unique voice.

Join us for FRESH INK: Writing the Book of Your Heart, a public writing workshop for teens & adults with author Mariama Lockington on Saturday, August 10th at 826CHI!

Mariama J. Lockington is an adoptee, educator, and the author of the #ownvoices middle grade novel "For Black Girls Like Me." Mariama calls many places home but currently lives in Kentucky with her partner and her little sausage dog, Henry. Her work has appeared in a number of magazines and journals, including Buzzfeed News Reader, Bodega Magazine, and Prelude Magazine. "For Black Girls Like Me" is Mariama's debut novel and the book of her heart.

826 Day Sidewalk Sale

Join us the weekend before 826 Day on Saturday, 8/24 from 12-5pm and Sunday, 8/25 from 1-4pm outside of the Secret Agent Supply for deals, steals, and prize wheels in honor of our 15th anniversary.

The sidewalk sale is produced in tandem with the Wicker Park Bucktown Chamber of Commerce's End of Summer Sale.

826 Day at the Ace Hotel!

Join us to celebrate 826CHI's 15th birthday on the scenic rooftop Prairie of the Ace Hotel with special guest Yuriy Sardarov from Chicago Fire!

This event is all-ages and open to the public, so tell your friends! We'll be celebrating the students, families, teachers, volunteers, donors, and community partners that have made 826CHI a nurturing, creative space for young people to explore their worlds through writing over the past 15 years.

Expect gorgeous skyline views, readings from 826CHI student writers, live musical performances adapted from 826CHI student writing from Wyatt Waddell , Matt Beard (Vender and the Cobras),   and Patrick Budde (Perfect Posture), and *free* snacks and lemonade (plus a cash bar)!

Your mission, if you choose to accept it, is to sing, dance, read books, and make crafts with Agent Zach and your friends, parents, and siblings on the first Sunday of every month at the Wicker Park Secret Agent Supply Co. This message will self-destruct in 30 seconds. We're counting on you, junior story agents!

This event is free and open to the public. Recommended for junior agents ages 0-4 and their families.
