What’s your favorite book and who is your favorite author?
Captain Underpants by Dav Pilkey, because it’s funny. They invent random things and they hypnotize their teachers.

Do you have any special hobbies or talents?
My hobby is playing videos games and writing and drawing. My favorite video game is Clash Royale.

What is your favorite thing about writing?
Inspiring other people. I can give them an idea to write their own story.

What’s your favorite memory of 826CHI?
When Alex [a tutor] was here. She was funny and creative. She said funny stuff. I forgot but I remember that she was funny.

What inspired you to write “Giant Furry?”
When you put the drawing out there. When they’re climbing the mountain and there’s a little a boy on his back. It’s a little weird. The creature looks like a giraffe.

Can you tell us a bit about what Furry looks like in your story?
He’s very tall, he likes humans, and he’s very furry. His fur is brown and he’s very cute.

What do you think he eats?
Grass.

What does he sound like?
He probably makes a mooing noise! But a little bit squeakier.

I love how in the ending, we find out that the boy wasn’t dreaming because he found a piece of fur. What gave you that idea?
I just thought of it, like, as a mysterious ending.

Do you have writing advice for other students?
The tutors help me out. They help make more story make more sense and adding more punctuation. Try your best!

What’s something else you want the world to know about you?
I’m funny! The last thing I laughed was my friend who was saying words that don’t make sense.

Can you tell us about your Halloween costume?
I just made it up. I got this grey suit with a hoodie and I decided I wanted to be Santa, but evil, so I mixed Santa hat, the hoodie, and long finger gloves so I had three costumes that I was wearing.

If you were an animal what would you be?
A dinosaur. Because I love dinosaurs. I think they’re very cool, like a t-rex because they have little arms and I think that’s funny.

Our work together

Our 826 Day event on the roof of Ace Hotel Chicago was a beautiful celebration of our community from our donors to our students and everyone in between (pictured above is 826CHI supporter TASHA’s performance). Our book P.S. You Sound Like Someone I Can Trust  was available in the hotel’s suites, Ace Hotel Chicago has hosted our annual love-themed print show featuring work by local artists inspired by our students writing on love, and their Senior Sales Manager, Tenasha Wilcoxon, spoke to our students in After-School Tutoring & Writing’s Speakers & Snacks series about what it’s like to work at a hotel.

Our Work Together

The partnership between East Village Youth Program and 826CHI is a yearly collaboration to help students achieve their goal of being accepted into their college of choice and for many to be the first in their family to attend college. This fall, 826CHI staff and 12 volunteers worked with 13 high school seniors on their personal statements for college applications. The partnership continues in the Spring when 826CHI and volunteers will return to EVYP to support students as they apply for scholarships.
