Just a Wink (The Diddy Bop)

You try to wink for me
I don’t care that you are in fact blinking at me
Because the same intended mischief is there
Try as you may
You can’t separate the flaring of your nostrils
From the attempted winking

How many winks do you have for me?

I don’t want these winks
To be precious
I try for flippancy
And lofty buoyancy
Every time your nostrils flare
And you do your blinking wink
But please know that they still make me giddy
Because it’s the intention that counts

How many winks do you have for me?

Is there a maximum redeemable amount
Or years from now
Can I still come to you for a wink
The coyness in your two blinking eyes
can age finely like cheese
But they will never fail to make me melt (like cheese)

How many winks do you have for me?

I can’t get enough winks

I myself can’t wink
I think this is an integral part
of my evolutionary process
Everyone else still has the vestigial ability to wink
And I am left to observe them
I don’t even mind the inability

I can’t get enough winks

All I want for Christmas is not you
I just want your winks
Your half blinks
Your miniscule gesture of mischief
Telling me we both know something
And I will keep it hush-hush
As I simultaneously try to figure out
What we both seem to know

I can’t get enough winks

Winks are the most magical thing humans can do
Seemingly sent to Earth for me to cherish
Because they bind me to you
This contract of collusion is oddly enough
Capable of making me feel safely enveloped
In the realm behind your eyelids.
