Dear 826CHI Community:
Our hearts have been breaking over the killing of Adam Toledo and Jaslyn Adams. Our thoughts and condolences are with their families and loved ones, the Little Village and West Humboldt Park communities, and the communities of Gary Elementary and Cameron Elementary. We share in our city’s grief, the composite of sadness, anger, and frustration over beautiful young lives taken at the hands of a Chicago police officer and continuing gun violence.
To our 826CHI BIP(arents)oC, when we as parents and families say that we are holding our children a little tighter tonight our love for them should be the only driver, and not also the fear in knowing that the beautiful and marvelous Black and Brown bodies they inhabit are in constant danger simply because they exist. Our children deserve to have the fullness of whom they are seen, known, and treasured. For those of you who may have had to have “The Talk” with your children for the first time, or again, about being Black and Brown and what it means when interacting with police and the world, you are seen. You are not alone in that grief and that violence.
We say that every student enters 826CHI a storyteller because we hold it to be true that every young person is a wondrous story in and of themselves. We hold this to be true for Adam Toledo. We hold this to be true for Jaslyn Adams. At this time, we are present with you our students, families, and community in all that you may be feeling. We are here for you. Always.

Nuestros corazones están destrozados por el asesinato de Adam Toledo y Jaslyn Adams. Nuestros pensamientos y condolencias están con sus familias y seres queridos, las comunidades de Little Village y West Humboldt Park, y las comunidades de Gary Elementary y Cameron Elementary. Compartimos el dolor de nuestra ciudad, lo cual es una combinación de tristeza, ira y frustración por las hermosas vidas jóvenes tomadas a manos de un oficial de policía de Chicago y la violencia de armas recorrente.
A nuestra comunidad BIPOC, cuando nosotros como padres y familias decimos que esta noche estamos abrazando un poco más a nuestros hijos, el único motivador debe ser nuestro amor por ellos, no el miedo de saber que los hermosos y maravillosos cuerpos negros y latinos que habitan están en constante peligro, simplemente porque existen. Nuestros niños merecen saber que vemos, sabemos y atesoramos quiénes son. Para aquellos de ustedes que han tenido que, por primera o otra vez,e tener “La Conversación” sobre ser negros o Latinx, y lo que significa en interacciones con la policía y el mundo, los vemos. No están solo en ese dolor y esa violencia.
Decimos que cada estudiante ingresa a 826CHI como narrador porque creemos que cada joven es una historia maravillosa en sí mismo. Sostenemos que esto es cierto para Adam Toledo. Sostenemos que esto es cierto para para Jaslyn Adams. En este momento, estamos presentes con ustedes, nuestros estudiantes, familias y comunidad en todo lo que puedan estar sintiendo. Estamos aquí para ti. Siempre.
